The 2020 vintage of Combottes is very strong chez Barthod this year. The nose shares the same sense of plumminess as the Chambolle AC, delivering a fine constellation of plums, cherries, raw cocoa, pigeon, woodsmoke, a lovely base of soil tones and just a bit of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and sappy at the core, with a full-bodied format, lovely focus and grip, fine-grained tannins and impeccable balance on the long, soil –driven and extremely pretty finish. A lovely bottle.
This too is aromatically perfumed and airy with slightly spicier red currant aromas that are trimmed in extremely subtle wood nuances. The cool, pure and more elegant middle weight flavors flash excellent underlying tension and a bracing salinity on the more complex and longer finale where a touch of youthful austere slowly emerges. Lovely juice.
Pretty balckcurrant and redcurrant fruit laced with sous-bois unfurl on the nose, though it is not intense. The mineral component becomes more accentuated with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit on the entry. There is a touch of greenness here, just around the edges, a hint of bell pepper towards the finish.
