Lagavulin Distillery The Distillers Edition PX Single Malt Scotch is a masterpiece of depth and character, offering an irresistibly rich and smoky experience from start to finish. On the nose, it’s intensely satisfying—layers of deep peat and warm vanilla mingle beautifully with a raisiny sweetness that perfectly balances the smoke, while hints of crisp, roasted malt add intrigue. The palate is luscious and full-bodied, with sweet malt flavors enveloped by waves of smoke, a delightful salty tang, and subtle notes of coffee, vanilla, and fruit that glimmer through each sip. The finish is remarkably long—even by Islay standards—with lingering echoes of fruit, peat, and oak that keep you coming back for more. Bold, complex, and endlessly engaging, this whisky is pure indulgence in a glass.

It’s a brave person who tries to persuade a malt like Lagavulin to go into a different direction. Indeed, even PX casks, from the sweetest fortified wine of all, can’t fully obscure the distillery’s character, just give it a raisined coating. The creosote turns to tar and licorice, while there’s Syrah-like sootiness, and damson. This release is slightly less sweet than in the past and is the better for it, though I still prefer my Lagavulin relatively ‘naked.’

Uneven bouquet features smells of peanuts, almond paste, pipe tobacco with atypical scents of limestone, metal tubing, Band-Aids and peated malt. The one-dimensional entry is austerely focused on the oak; however, at midpalate the flavor turns honeyed, nougaty, concentrated and lusciously dark caramel-like. Finishes with assertive tastes of butterscotch, marzipan, sherry, egg cream and brine.
